Necrospermia: What It Is And What Causes

Male infertility can be a big taboo among men. The problem is that, when a couple decides to have a child, the man needs to deal with this type of situation and face it in a healthy way since it is important for everything to go well. There are situations where it is very difficult to deal with this type of situation, such as when necrospermia occurs , a problem that can be very serious and make the dream of having a child very shaken. We will talk more deeply today about this problem and how to deal with it.

What is Necrospermia?

Necrospermia is nothing more than the term that designates the condition of dead sperm in a man. It is a very rare type of infertility, affecting about 0.5% of men worldwide. There are basically two types of necrospermia:

  • Incomplete necrospermia : Occurs when not all of a man’s reproductive cells are dead. A man is diagnosed with incomplete necrospermia when he has more than 5% and less than 45% of his live sperm.
  • Complete necrospermia : It is when all a man’s reproductive cells are dead. This case is even more rare to occur.

Necrospermia, like many of the causes of male infertility, has no symptoms whatsoever, even though it can sometimes be related to infections in the testis region.

Causes of Necrospermia

Because it is a very rare condition, studies on necrospermia carried out to this day still fail to reveal exactly why it occurs, although it is already known that it is linked to several symptoms, such as:

  • Hormonal problems
  • Previous cancer in the testicles
  • Testicular infections
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Long periods without ejaculation
  • Advanced age

How is the Diagnosis done?

The diagnosis of the disease is basically made through a spermogram , where the quality of the sperm, but also the count and their motility of these cells is analyzed in the laboratory. Other tests can be done to make sure that the sperm are healthy in origin, that is, if the problem is in the production or in some part of the path until it is expelled from the body. However, it is necessary to be aware of the results of these tests, as some things can alter the diagnosis.

Beware of False Diagnosis

Often, when necrospermia is diagnosed, it can be a laboratory error . It is not that the tests are not done correctly, but there are many factors that can cause a man’s reproductive cells to be identified as dead. Some of them are:

  • The use of spermicides in recent sexual intercourse;
  • The sperm collection was not done correctly;
  • Sperm spent too long in an inappropriate environment before being analyzed

Although they are not common things to happen, it is possible that these cases do happen. So stay tuned when doing any such exam so that there are no mistakes.

Treatment of Necrospermia

The treatment of necrospermia is usually related to exactly what is believed to be its cause. For example, if it is related to a hormonal problem, the doctor will recommend treatment accordingly. The fact that it is a very rare condition , makes doctors resort to several alternatives before making a drastic decision how to give up treatment because there is no cure. As there are several possible causes, the chances of cure can vary widely, from very easy to zero.

Is it possible to get pregnant anyway?

When a man has incomplete necrospermia, the chances of getting a woman pregnant are not high, but they still exist. On the other hand, when a man has only dead sperm, that is, when he has complete necrospermia, unfortunately it is not possible for fertilization to occur. The only hope that exists, if the
tests reveal that there are living reproductive cells at their origin, use alternative methods of fertilization . The intrauterine fertilization is always the best option. It is the famous artificial insemination , where the man’s sperm is placed directly in the woman’s uterus to fertilize.

The IVF is also an option. Even today, it is not a very accessible method due to its high cost, both of the procedure itself and of the medical follow-up necessary for the process to be done in the correct way. On the other hand, the rate of success of in vitro fertilization is quite high, which is encouraging for most couples.

Although not very common, necrospermia is a serious problem and often difficult to deal with because it is not easy to have the dream of having an interrupted child. The good news is that there are treatments that can help, even though it’s not the easiest thing in the world. In situations like this, a couple should always seek support from each other, as this is how they can overcome problems and go through these problems of the couple’s infertility . Necrospermia does not mean the total impossibility of having a child and while there are chances, there is hope . There are alternative methods of fertilization and treatments to be done. Therefore, support for each other and the couple’s hope must prevail.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
