High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy – How to Control?

During all prenatal visits, your obstetrician will measure your blood pressure and mark your blood pressure record on your card. This procedure will be and should be performed for control, because if high blood pressure is found in pregnancy, the care must be doubled until the moment of  delivery .

Pressure Control

When the pressure  exceeds 140/90 mmhg , even more if the woman has never suffered from high blood pressure the doctor should be alert and have better monitoring, especially if the woman is already at the end of the second trimester.

Pressure is measured in two ways, systolic and diastolic pressure. During pregnancy the pressure that will be carefully checked is the diastolic pressure, which is the lowest pressure number. If the pressure is high more than 2 times in the same week, care must be taken.

The concern about high blood pressure in pregnancy is due to a very serious problem that can cause serious, if not fatal, damage to the pregnant woman and her baby. This problem is called  pre-eclampsia  and causes the  body’s protein to be eliminated through urine .

The test that will diagnose pre-eclampsia is the urine test, which your obstetrician should order as soon as the suspicion is raised. It will be confirmed if protein is found in the urine sample and your visits to the doctor should increase for a more rigorous control of blood pressure in addition to more frequent tests for follow-up. It is natural for women who are suffering from high blood pressure during pregnancy, to complain of  severe pain in the head and neck, blurred vision with bright spots and swelling throughout the body , especially legs and feet.

Important: Pregnant women who already suffer from hypertension should be monitored and treated with the cardiologist during pregnancy so that it does not aggravate the hypertension and harm the baby’s health.

What to Do to Control High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy?

Your doctor will recommend a balanced diet away from salty foods and strong spices, the advice is  foods rich in folic acid  that help the work of the dilating vessels, in addition to improved nutrition, it is essential to drink plenty of fluids. Of course, it will not be enough to reduce high blood pressure during pregnancy, but it will help control it, since salt is one of the main factors responsible for the increase in pressure at any stage of life.

Absolute rest is recommended  and as much as possible avoid worries and stress that cause the pressure to increase even more. If all of the doctor’s instructions do not result in low and high blood pressure control, he may recommend the use of antihypertensive drugs.

Women who are already hypertensive before pregnancy tend to have a drastic worsening during pregnancy and should have an even more rigorous monitoring not only by the obstetrician but also by her cardiologist. The control of weight gain and diet should be even stricter  , and often the medication already taken should be changed to one that does not harm the pregnancy. Maybe include a tea to help lower blood pressure naturally and relax. Talk to your obstetrician about which is the most suitable!

Typically, women who decide to become pregnant late are strong targets of high blood pressure in pregnancy. Most of them have a hectic and stressed life from their work routine, which is why they also wait so long to make the decision to get pregnant, awaiting their professional stability. About 14% of  women over 40 years old  have high blood pressure during pregnancy, which is why doctors consider it a more delicate pregnancy.

Pregnancy Risks

When high blood pressure cannot be controlled and reduced through food and medication, childbirth should be brought forward as soon as possible, because due to the high pressure, baby and mother are at serious  risk of death .

Even 75% of deaths due to high blood pressure occur due to pre-eclampsia. Therefore, care must be taken with great care and responsibility, not only for the medical part, but for the mother, who will have to become aware of the real situation.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
