Sinusitis in Children – Why Does It Occur?

Index

Unfortunately childhood is not only joys and fun, diseases and infections occur without giving notice of the parents’ despair. Children are susceptible to contracting and facing various health problems throughout childhood due to their low immunity. Infections, bacteria and diseases in general can appear for no apparent reason, as is the case with sinusitis in children.

Sinusitis occurs due to an inflammation of the mucosa in the areas around the nose, eyes and cheeks, and is known as the sinuses. The problem may be due to an infectious condition or allergic problems and are caused by fungi, viruses or bacteria.

Sinusitis usually presents as complications of flu and colds due to the large accumulation of secretions in the infected area. The problem is divided into two types, it can be chronic or acute. Chronic sinusitis is determined when the presence of swelling and inflammation in the sinuses occurs for more than 12 weeks, persisting even after treatment directed by the doctor. Acute, on the other hand, is the one that responds immediately to treatments, disappearing until 12 weeks normally caused by another health problem.

To trigger chronic sinusitis in children, certain factors can influence such as allergies, rhinitis and asthma that normally block the sinus passages causing infections. The septum deviation is also a major factor because of its nasal misalignment, the restriction in breathing can affect directly causing the problem. The growth of nasal polyps is also another common problem, since with the growth of tissues in this area they totally affect the passage of the breath. Any other problem that may affect the sinuses making it impossible for air and breathing to pass may trigger a chronic sinus problem. Adequate treatment and medical follow-up is necessary to control the discomfort caused by the problem.

Symptoms and Treatment of Infant Sinusitis

Whether chronic or acute sinusitis, the symptoms are usually very similar, which is why the difficulty in making the diagnosis right from the start. It is usually analyzed in addition to the symptoms, the time the infection remains. Symptoms such as pain in the face, especially in the forehead area, are one of the main complaints of patients suffering from sinusitis. The loss of smell or decrease this sensitivity may also occur, and is one of signs of chronic sinusitis.

X-ray of the sinus of the face

Earaches, jaw pain and bad breath are very obvious signs of the problem, which can be followed by constant sore throats , nausea caused by the discharge from the sinuses and cough. As previously mentioned, all of these symptoms can be recurrent in both chronic and acute sinusitis, being the only difference in the period it is installed in the patient. The diagnosis must be made after medical analysis of the eyes, ears, nose, throat and sinuses. Usually the exam requested for completion is the face tomography, where details of the sinus of the face and nasal area are accurately observed.

If the specialist deems it necessary to have additional exams such as nasal endoscopy, nasal cultures and allergy tests, blood tests for analysis and detection of possible diseases that directly affect immunity may be requested. The treatment will be indicated according to the results of the exams, and is directed to the real need, so the case must be studied before starting. In some cases, only the use of medication to relieve symptoms may be requested, while in others, a more controlled and rigid treatment so that the problem can be definitively solved.

In the most common cases, the use of saline solution, saline solution,  helps to dissolve nasal secretions that cause severe pain, and may be accompanied by the use of nasal corticosteroids, which will act in the treatment of infection. In cases considered more severe, the use of corticosteroids and antibiotics is recommended. Especially in the case of bacterial sinusitis, where only the antibiotic will be able to fight and resolve the situation.

In patients where sinusitis resists all the treatments indicated, endoscopic surgery can be indicated where all tissue or material that is preventing the passage of air will be removed. The problem is uncomfortable and painful, but there are several types of treatment to relieve and resolve the problem permanently. To follow an appropriate treatment, look for an otolaryngologist who will evaluate and indicate the best treatment.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
