Another participation by Dr. Ana Luisa Vilela, a nutritionist. This time, Dr. answers questions about the baby’s first foods. What may or may not be consumed by the baby and how to introduce certain foods. Welcome again Dr. Ana!
Changing Diapers: What are the ideal foods for a baby’s first solid intake?
Dra Ana Luisa: Ideally, the consumption of solid foods starts with fruits, it is normal to start with shaved bananas, but pears, apples, papaya, guava and regional fruits can also be used.
Also don’t forget to offer the fruits in the form of juices. 100ml is the ideal amount, above that it is possible that the child feels full and refuses other foods. Start with orange juice (prefer the lime type), and then introduce other fruits such as cashew, mango, guava, watermelon, apple, etc.
Changing Diapers: When should foods like meats and fish be introduced to the baby?
Dra Ana Luisa: From the 6th month of age, breastfeeding ceases to offer all the essential nutrients the baby needs. Therefore, the introduction of complementary foods should be started slowly and gradually.
Changing Diapers: Refined sugar and derived sweets can be safely introduced at what stage of the child? And chocolate, can babies eat chocolate before completing their first year?
Dr. Ana Luisa: Babies have their taste free of “addictions” so to speak, that is, they do not yet know the difference between something artificially sweetened and a naturally sweet food. If sweets and flavor enhancers are introduced too early in the child’s diet it will be more difficult for him to accept healthier foods such as fruits and natural juices. Not to mention the risk of excessive consumption of these foods that can lead to health problems such as obesity and even diabetes.
It is not necessary to prohibit, after all for children sometimes everything that is prohibited becomes more interesting, but it is extremely important to educate them so that they learn to consume these foods in a moderate way and respecting the limits imposed by their parents. In any case, do not offer these foods before the 6th month of age.
Interview by Dr. Ana Luisa
Changing Diapers: Leaves and vegetables should be offered at what age?
Dra Ana Luisa: From 6.5 months onwards, vegetables and leaves can and should be inserted in vegetable and vegetable soups, leaves such as kale, almond, lettuce, watercress, spinach. An interesting tip to put leaves in the baby food and not cause the baby to choke and freeze the leaves and when they turn into ice cubes break them inside the sachet until they become small pieces.
Changing Diapers: Can citrus juices do any harm to the baby?
Dra Ana Luiza: Citrus juices are rich in vitamins, but they also have a more acidic taste and can make acceptance difficult. That is why we prefer lime orange which is sweeter even without added sugar and palatable for the little ones.
Thank you so much Dra Ana, taking care of the little ones just got a lot easier with these tips, and moms, baby’s first feeding is a very important moment, register with affection.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.
Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
