Early Literacy – What’s Your Opinion?

Index

In parents, we are concerned with all the stages and phases of our children and literacy is one of them. One of the most important steps in a child’s life, learning to read and write marks a new phase, is the child’s entry into the world of information.

However, recent changes in school laws have changed the duration of primary education from 8 to 9 years, automatically transforming the last year of early childhood or pre-school education as it was known for the first grade. The age range for entry into the first series that was 7 years old with the change became 6 , which generated great confusion among parents. Some, depending on the birthday month, start the first year even at the age of 5, going through the cut-off date criterion. But the big question is: Is this good for children? Do they have enough maturity to enter the world of literacy when they used to play and play? Is it not early literacy?

This subject is divided into thousands of opinions and between parents proud to see their little children already joining syllables, there are parents who defend that everything has its time! This division of opinions, views and methods is also divided between schools, public and private, with their differentiated methods of learning. For example, the Waldorf pedagogy method that defends that children up to 7 years of age should have only one responsibility, PLAY!! Municipal and state schools also defend the point of view, betting on recreational activities and games developing physical and motor skills, in addition to the interaction between the group giving self-confidence and above all, having fun. They argue that early literacy and literacy hinder the child’s developmental stages and may affect in the future because they have skipped important stages of development.

Some private schools start literacy from the smallest classes, at the age of 3, offering handouts and written activities of stippling, vowels, letters and drawings and even homework. Focusing on the development of motor coordination and on the learning and recognition of letters as soon as possible, facilitating literacy. Some even come out of pre to the first series already fully literate! They believe that stimulation is the differential of this method of education. They believe that early knowledge will offer greater security in elementary education , both in writing and in reading .

Advantages and Disadvantages of Early Literacy

Everything that is done with pressure is not considerably healthy, especially when it comes to a child. The ideal for children is to respect their time, let it flow naturally and through stimuli for their age group to present the world of letters. Children are curious and show their interest in stories, books, comics and the whole universe of knowledge and when they show this interest it is easier to stimulate.

Which father and hand are not proud to see their little son putting syllables together? And reading the first word? Of course it is exciting, but respect for time as well as the difficulties of each child are essential . If the methods offered are presented in a way of interaction and fun, the interest in learning is heightened which facilitates further knowledge. However, when charged, pressured and even questioned because he cannot keep up with others, what should be a peaceful and healthy method of learning becomes a traumatic phase.

Many parents are looking for specialists to find out what is happening to their children, who at the height of their 5 years of age are unable to read like the others. This demand that they need to learn at all costs can have an inverse reaction , that of disinterest in the school. That is why there is little care in this phase and stimulating does not mean charging and pressing, it means seeing what the child likes to do the most, which presents more interest and ease when learning and in a fun way to present this world of knowledge.

According to specialists in educational psychology, literacy and literacy is never too early, after all, learning is always good as long as the child’s limits are respected and following his / her interest. Learning to read and write is a challenge for all human beings and is an achievement that every child must pass, so no matter the method, whether it is through homework or playful games, the important thing is to stimulate and have fun.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
