Dunstan Method – The Language of Babies

If there is a difficult task in the matter of taking care of babies, it is about finding out what they want and why they are crying. For everyone, crying is the form of communication for the baby who does not yet know how to speak, ask or request what he wants or at least thought. Australian Priscila Dunstan created the dunstan method which shows that this is not the case.

Which mainly first-time mother didn’t panic after bathing , changing diapers , feeding and the baby crying tirelessly for long minutes without finding out what’s going on? And breastfeed again and look at the diaper and check if the clothes are too tight and feed again (mom always thinks the baby is hungry) and nothing !! Is it colic or is it sleep? My God, what’s going on? And the famous phrase “why don’t babies come with an instruction manual?”

How to Find Out What Your Baby Is Asking for?

According to the Australian, it is possible to recognize signs of babies and find out what they want or what is happening. The dunstan method is applied to babies aged 0 to 3 months and it is possible to communicate through the natural reflex sounds that they emit. The practice empowers mothers and fathers to understand and listen to the language of newborns to calm them down quickly, serving them exactly what they need.

Through her sharp and sensitive ear, Priscila Dunstan was able to pick up 5 different sounds that her son made when he needed something. At first she thought it was just a strong bond between mother and child and that allowed her to be able to communicate with the baby so young. However, on a trip to the supermarket, when she witnessed the scene of a mother with her baby, she noticed that the little baby emitted the same sounds as her son. It was the starting point to start his research and through the help of more than a thousand babies from all over the world, it was possible to develop the dunstan method and prove its efficiency.

The Dunstan method is very effective in helping parents with baby care in the first trimester. Very stressful period and that the parents are in complete adaptation with the new routine. The difficulty in interpreting what the baby desires without success ends up becoming a martyrdom, and with crises of relentless crying it ends up bringing low self-esteem, a feeling of incompetence and some cases even leading to depression for feeling “that you can’t cope”. Disagreement problems between couples are also common due to all this stress.

The method focuses not only on calming and finding out what the baby wants when it is crying, but on identifying it before it starts crying. That is why it is appointed as a pre-cry tool where it is possible to identify the baby’s needs before it becomes a show of tears.

How Does the Dunstan Method Work?

It seems practically impossible to identify what babies need only by signals, but through various demonstrations of their research it is possible to confirm that it is possible and no seven-headed bug. It only takes will and open your ears wide to hear the sounds.

Cry of hunger

For moms any crying is a reason for hunger, but it is not always so. How to know if it really is? According to the method, the characteristic cry of hunger is when the baby cries by pressing the tongue on the roof of the mouth, based on the suction reflex and making a “neh” sound.

Gas crying

When the baby is full of gas, he compresses the rib cage and cries so that he tries to take something out of it, making the “eh” sound. In addition to the sounds it is important to observe the body’s signals as well.

Crying discomfort

When uncomfortable with the position, with tight clothing or mainly with a dirty diaper, the baby produces a sound similar to “heh”, who comes in a complaining tone and slowly.

Choro de sono

Usually the cry of sleep comes with the mouth in an oval shape, as if it were a yawn and occurs in the sound of “Owh”.

Crying colic

The crying of colic is usually more irritated and more acute, with more suffering and its characteristic sound is “eairh”. Visibly smarter and more intense.

IMPORTANT: When parents can understand this language of the dunstan method and take care of their babies in the first trimester properly after each sign, it is common for mother, father and baby communication to become even clearer and more objective.

Even though the sounds change over the months, babies still use the same language as they understand that their parents already know it. It is important to calm down and pay attention to the baby’s sounds along with facial and body expressions. It seems to be very difficult in practice, but it is all about training and paying attention to details. Language will become your baby’s private communication and you and everything will be easier, believe me!

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
