Pruritic Urticated Papules – What is It and How to Treat It?

Pregnancy is undoubtedly one of the periods of greatest change in a woman’s life, both emotionally and physically. At the same time that a storm of hormones invades you and causes several changes even in your emotional state, these same hormones can cause you to develop certain conditions or allergies that you were previously unaware of.

This is the case of itchy urticated papules , a type of pregnancy-specific disease that can cause many women to be concerned. But what are the real dangers of this disease? And what are the best ways to treat? Does it affect the baby in any way?

It is known that it is a type of dermatosis, that is, a type of skin disease that has as main characteristic certain allergic manifestations such as redness, blisters and inflammation of the skin.

Despite all the discomfort, itchy urticated papules are benign and do no serious harm to the woman or the baby. However, this does not mean that women should not undergo any type of treatment, as indirect effects can end up hindering their life during the disease. We will talk about all of these aspects in the following topics.

Causes of Itching Stinging Papules

As we said at the beginning of the text, pregnancy is a period when your body receives a very large amount of hormones in a short period of time. Inevitably, this ends up causing your body to have some reactions and one of them is the development of itchy urticated papules.

Some studies indicate that the sudden growth of the belly is one of the factors that cause the disease, making the pregnancy of twins or triplets more likely to develop pruritic urticated papules.

This does not mean that every woman who becomes pregnant will develop the disease, only that it is something common and that it will not affect her pregnancy directly, that is, it does not harm the baby.

But even if the baby is not affected by the disease, it causes discomfort, itching and even sores on the woman’s skin, which can be quite unpleasant, especially if we take into account all the other symptoms of pregnancy. Therefore, an adequate treatment must be done as soon as possible.

How is the disease manifested?

Pruritic urticated papules are lesions that usually appear in the form of reddish spots in the region of the abdominal stretch marks and spread to the region close to the woman’s navel.

The disease usually worsens and spreads to the belly and even to the buttocks and regions close to the thighs. It is a very common condition, affecting one in 160 pregnant women, on average, and occurs more frequently in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Of the registered cases of the disease, about 73% occur in the first pregnancy , which proves the fact that the disease is caused by the body’s unpreparedness for so many changes. It is not often that a woman who had the disease in her first pregnancy develops it in later pregnancies.

How is the diagnosis made?

The diagnosis of the disease is made by a dermatologist, who through observation can ask the affected woman to do a series of tests in order to rule out the possibility of other diseases. After checking, the doctor will indicate the treatment for each case according to the progress of the disease in the woman’s body.

Treatment For Urticated Papules

The treatment of the disease is done mainly to relieve the itchy symptoms that bother the woman a lot, making her nights sleep less peaceful and making her day uncomfortable.

After alleviating these symptoms, the intention is to eliminate all itchy urticated papules once and for all. Emollients and moisturizers are indicated for this treatment, but the use of corticosteroids can also be done, depending on the severity of the case.

The treatment usually lasts between 4 and 6 weeks and the disease is not usually resistant and does not appear again in other pregnancies, as we said earlier.

Do I need to worry?

Finally, we need to talk about the psychological state of a woman who has an illness. Just as each body has a different reaction, each mind also works at its own pace. This means that while some women will remain calm when diagnosed with the disease, some may be extremely concerned, both with their body and the baby’s health, which can be a problem.

The best advice for these cases is to talk to a doctor who can reassure you and make you understand the real severity of the disease. In this way, the woman is able to calm down and do the treatment with more tranquility.

It is not always easy to go through situations where it is necessary to treat a disease while you are pregnant, but know that this is something quite common , not only with skin diseases, but with several other types as well.

The important thing is to know how to stay calm, understand how the treatment is done and always care for the baby’s health, of course, for your health too. Unforeseen events happen all the time in our lives, but we have to be prepared for them, especially in stages as delicate as a pregnancy.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
