Diaper Allergy – Why Does It Occur?

Index

Among the thousands of discoveries in the world of motherhood that came to make life easier for mothers, the disposable diaper is considered one of the eighth wonders of the world for providing facilitation in the routine and day to day of mothers. Gone is the time that staring at the tank and washing buckets and buckets of dirty diapers was a job for mothers and today the diaper got dirty just changing the baby and throwing away the used one. But what about when your baby is allergic to diapers, how do you do it?

Diaper allergy or diaper dermatitis as it is called by doctors is a very common problem among babies and there is a rash, redness or irritation on the skin where the diaper is placed and which causes great discomfort to the baby. Diaper allergy is not always necessarily caused by the diaper itself, but by the accumulation of urine and feces in its plastic material, in addition to the dampness it causes.

Diaper allergy can also be caused by irritating substances or better generated by several factors that irritate the skin, such as the fragrance of a disposable diaper or used in infant hygiene products. As with soaps and fabric softeners that we use to wash your clothes, it is not always by changing the diaper brand that the problem will be solved. The vast majority of diaper allergy cases are related to substances found in the baby’s own feces that generate the allergyand the peeling and irritability of the skin in the region that is so sensitive, in many cases even after the introduction of new foods in the baby’s menu. The mixture of baby pee and coconut causes the PH of the skin to increase and activate the skin enzymes that are responsible for major skin irritations which opens the way for triggering a bacteria called candida that exists mainly in diarrhea and causes itching intense, burning, pellets and very discomfort.

My Baby has a diaper allergy – what to do?

First, it is recommended that the pediatrician check the situation and analyze whether a more serious infection has not affected the region. In the case of the presence of candidiasis or any other bacterial or fungal infection, treatment with antibiotics is necessary to combat it, in addition to antifungal ointments, which is why it is important to visit the doctor to assess the condition and recommend appropriate treatment. Second is the correct hygiene in the place where the allergy to diaper was affected. The use of products that contain perfumes even if antiallergic are not recommended during the treatment, as is the case with baby wipes that must be dispensed with until the end of the treatment. Cleaning the area should be done carefully without rubbing the affected area as it can cause severe pain for the baby.

In the case of babies using cloth diapers, in addition to the recommendations mentioned above when cleaning, the use of washing powder and fabric softeners for diaper washing should be discarded. During the treatment and if possible afterwards it is recommended to wash only with neutral stone soap without perfume, which keeps it well hygienic, odorless and away from possible allergies to substances and perfumes. The last recommendation that is indispensable for the baby’s improvement is to leave the baby as long as possible without using the diaper, be it disposable or cloth. Exposure to the sun in the recommended period for the baby is also of great help since the sun has healing power and provides vitamin D. Allow the skin of the area to breathe together with the help of the medicines recommended by the pediatrician. Corticosteroid ointment is of great importance in the treatment and offers great relief and speed in the treatment.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
