Nucal translucency

This is a very important test for fetuses and mothers because it detects possible changes in babies, such as Down syndrome, Patau syndrome, Edwards syndrome and countless other problems that may happen during conception.

When is the Exam done?

It can be done from the 11th week to the 13th week , but it is usually done on the 12th week where doctors think it can be more effective to identify significant changes. The examination consists of measuring the fetal nuchal fold (skin on the nape of the neck) and the presence of nasal bone.

Exam Result

The normality parameter of the exam is determined by each laboratory where the exam is performed, but there is a limit for it to be considered normal, or risk zone. The limit considered normal is 2.5 mm, above that it is a risk zone.

But if you did the test and it was detected a higher value than that, it does not mean that your baby does not necessarily have a problem, but a number of factors must be detected in order for the diagnosis to be confirmed. As for example in Down’s syndrome, if the test gave a result of 5 and the limit is 2.5, it is more than certain that the doctor who accompanies your prenatal care will ask for more tests.

A tip for pregnant women: do you want to improve the pleasure of sex during the gestational phase? Use water-based lubricating gels that play the role of cervical mucus and still control vaginal pH, reducing the chances of proliferation of fungi and bacteria responsible for infections. Famivita has developed the perfect lubricant for pregnant women and pregnant women, the FamiGel . You can buy it here in our online store.

Other Important Exams in Pregnancy

The amniocentesis test consists of removing a small amount of liquid from the amniotic bag so that a fetal karyotype test (checking chromosome numbers) is done.

This test is carefully recommended by doctors , as there is a small risk for the fetus and the mother and only with the couple’s authorization to do this test.

Morphological Ultrasound

Another exam that is done but this one without risks is the morphological ultrasound, where the exam is done with more criteria, later on I will talk in more detail about this exam so complex and so important.

Remember, if you received an ultrasound report, saying that your baby’s nuchal fold is greater than 2.5 do not panic, for any syndromes to be diagnosed a combination of factors is needed. I myself have seen and heard several cases in which this measure did not mean anything in relation to syndromes, just talk to your doctor and he will tell you whether or not the risk of amniocentesis is worth it.

Bjus and see you!

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
