The human body is formed by a very detailed structure, each one with its function of functioning. The main structure of the face that forms the nose is a cartilage called nasal septum or septal quadrangular cartilage, in addition to the cartilage it is formed by bone and mucosa. It is the septum that causes the division of the nose to occur, resulting in two nostrils, this being its only function.
Already during early childhood it is possible to deviate the nasal septum, due to a congenital disorder or even during the process of developing facial bones . The deviation can also be caused by infections, inflammatory processes or even in children who suffer from chronic allergy attacks. Another very common reason for deviated nasal septum is after trauma caused by a fall or some other type of accident that can injure the nose.
Deviation of the nasal septum itself does not pose any risk and there is only a recommendation for treatment if it is affecting breathing . Bearing in mind that before any indication of repair and treatment, the presence of allergic rhinitis, nasal turbinates or polyps should be investigated and discarded, which may be the real responsible for the respiratory difficulty after treatment and even if the problem persists, the treatment will be redirected to deviated nasal septum.
Symptoms of deviated nasal septum are totally linked to the way the child breathes, there are rare cases that are asymptomatic. They can be noticed in the way they breathe when they sleep, keeping their mouths open to breathe, children who snore a lot can also have a deviation, as well as difficulty sleeping and when they wake up tired. Other very common symptoms of patients suffering from deviated nasal septum are constant headaches, facial pain and sleep apnea .
How is the diagnosis and treatment of nasal septum deviation?
The diagnosis of nasal septum deviation is performed by an otorhinolaryngologist who, during a clinical examination, will use an instrument to visualize the inside of the nostrils where the deviation can be seen. Bearing in mind that deviation of the nasal septum only offers problems if it is hindering breathing and the presence of other problems such as polyps, nasal turbinates and even tumors that also hinder respiratory work should be checked .
The indicated treatment is not always surgical. Surgery to correct nasal septum deviation also called septoplasty is only indicated when the real need is verified due to the impossibility of air passage in the airways. Usually, surgical repair is indicated in late adolescence when growth has already stabilized , so there are isolated cases where when breathing difficulty is found, surgical intervention is necessary in childhood, even at the risk of deviation returning with growth.
The reparative surgery does not leave a scar since it is performed inside the nostrils, its recovery is considered smooth and very fast . In the first days, minor bleeding is common and only daily cleaning with saline solutions is necessary to ensure local hygiene. The child can return to his school activities after 4 days of surgery, to return to practicing martial sports, for example, he will need an average of 20 days. If the child practices physical activities and sports, it is necessary to inform the specialist who will indicate the appropriate period to return normally without major risks.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.
Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
