Amenorrhea – Causes and Treatment

The menstruation is a natural factor in the lives of all women of childbearing age, but some may suffer from menstrual absence for various reasons. The absence of menstruation is called amenorrhea and outside of the issues considered normal such as the period before female puberty, pregnancy and menopause it may indicate that something is not right in the body.

Many women end up not giving importance to menstrual absence and extending the medical consultation for evaluation. Making treatment difficult and even aggravating the problems that are leading to amenorrhea.

Types of amenorrhea

Menorrhea is classified into two types , the primary and the secondary The primary is characterized by girls who have not yet menstruated past the age of 15. In such cases, in addition to the absence of menstrual symptoms such as non-growth of pubic hair and breast buds are identified. And the secondary, which are women who already menstruate and go through periods longer than 3 to 6 months without menstruating, with no obvious cause.

In the case of primary amenorrhea, normally girls who do not menstruate until they are 15 years old and notice that their body does not undergo natural female changes should see a gynecologist. Menstrual absence can occur due to problems or congenital anomalies in the reproductive system, hormonal lack of control or in some cases due to the lack of opening of the hymen that can be so thick that it hinders the menstrual passage.

IMPORTANT: It is not always possible to prevent problems with amenorrhea, but a healthy life with a healthy diet and regular exercise without excess reduces the chances.

In secondary amenorrhea, there are several factors for it to occur and must be investigated until the focus is found. The main reasons are: pregnancy, excessive weight loss, obesity, eating disorders, hormonal imbalance, anxiety and stress, use of some medications, tumors and after uterine surgical procedures.

Women who exercise intensively or eat strict and radical diets can suffer from menstrual absence as well. Polycystic ovaries , hypothyroidism, hyperplasia, ovarian failure or early menopause also exhibit the symptom.

How to Diagnose the Cause of Amenorrhea?

The finding of amenorrhea and the verification of the entire condition must be performed by a gynecologist. The diagnosis will occur through physical evaluation, analysis of the patient’s history, complete blood count, pelvis imaging exams and gynecological evaluation exam . In the case of primary amenorrhea, more detailed blood tests will be able to verify if there is hormonal lack of control.

Through the exams, possible changes will be analyzed, mainly in the imaging procedures where it is possible to analyze the uterine conditions and the entire reproductive system. Upon detecting the problem, the specialist will indicate the appropriate treatment for the cause in order to normalize the menstrual cycle . It is worth noting that menstrual absence compromises female fertility and the lack of it can postpone the dream of becoming a mother.

How to deal with? (H3)

After all the exams and procedures requested by the gynecologist have been carried out and the cause of the amenorrhea is found, treatment will be indicated. In the case of primary amenorrhea, if the girl’s hormonal lack of control is found, treatment usually follows the basis of medications that will meet hormonal needs.

These hormonal medications speed up the body’s transformation or you may be asked to wait a longer period for it to occur naturally. Some gynecologists prefer to wait until the girl turns 16 and the body can react naturally , before starting treatment with hormonal medications.

If amenorrhea is caused by disorders of excess weight or below, treatment will be necessary to regulate the weight on the scale and thus return to the correct functioning of menstruation. Most of the causes of amenorrhea are treated , but only a doctor is qualified to evaluate the tests, diagnose and indicate the treatment as well as the exact dosage for each condition. Never self-medicate and always follow medical recommendations.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
