For those who have already realized their dream of becoming a mother or want to take a break between one child and another, what is the best way to prevent it? We currently have an extensive list of products and brands in order to prevent pregnancy, including oral and injectable contraceptives, condoms, adhesive contraceptives and IUDs, you can choose the one that best suits your routine and your body. But when talking about a safe contraceptive and without having to worry about it daily, we point to the IUD . But does IUD work safely?
The IUD works as a device introduced into the uterus or intrauterine as it is called and has contraceptive action . It is indicated for women who do not wish to have a child for a prolonged period, since it can stay in the body for 5 to 10 years, of course and can be removed in advance if you wish. The procedure for placing the IUD is done in the doctor’s office and is performed by the gynecologist, where the T-shaped device is introduced into the uterus in order to make it impossible for sperm to enter the tubes.
Always good to point out that the IUD works as a way of preventing pregnancy and not against sexually transmitted diseases, so for this purpose the use of condoms is essential. There are currently two types of IUDs on the market, copper and hormonal (progesterone) , both of which are extremely effective, indicating 99% contraceptive safety. The copper IUD makes it impossible for the sperm to move to the uterine tube, which makes it difficult to fertilize the egg. It causes the endometrium to narrow down, preventing the egg from fixing if fertilization occurs. The hormonal IUD, also known as IUS (Intrauterine System), in addition to making it impossible for sperm to move to the tube, prevents the growth of the endometrium, which prevents the fertilization of the egg.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using the IUD
Like any contraceptive method there are its pros and cons and it is up to each woman to check whether it is viable or not to use this method, as well as whichever she chooses. The advantages of using the IUD go beyond the great effectiveness it provides, for example:
- Minimal chances of getting pregnant, providing 99.8% contraceptive efficacy;
- There is no need to worry about taking it daily, let alone forget about it someday.
- Putting the cost on paper with other contraceptive methods, the IUD saves a lot;
- It is a long-term contraceptive that can be used between 5 and 10 years;
- Withdrawal can be requested at any time.
Just for the convenience of the woman to put the IUD and not having to worry if she is in the fertile period to have sex or be worried if the medication has failed or forgot to take the oral contraceptive is already a gift. For women who live in a daily rush with their professional lives it is the most suitable method that will provide, in addition to security, a lot of practicality. But as we have already mentioned, there are also the disadvantages of the method that unfortunately are only discovered after being placed and there is a decision that must be made by the woman together with her gynecologist, whether or not to risk it.
- Some women after IUD insertion suffer from uterine pain in addition to constant bleeding.
- Intensity of menstrual bleeding together with the presence of severe cramps.
- Pay attention if the IUD has not left the exact location. For this, a small string is left as a guide for the IUD inside the body.
Another disadvantage is that the placement and removal procedure cannot be done by the woman in her home. It must be performed in the doctor’s office by the gynecologist and, before the appointment is scheduled, complementary exams must be performed to rule out possible problems such as inflammation in the pelvis, ovarian cancer or even problems with endometriosis that would make it impossible to insert the IUD momentarily.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.
Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
