Some people suffer from a very uncomfortable problem that ends up causing embarrassment, which is excessive salivation. This problem has a very little known name, called by sialorrhea medicine and can be the result of several health issues, such as oral irritations, thrush and even dental prostheses poorly adapted to the mouth. These factors are simple to be solved and after a few days the situation is resolved.
However, there are causes that sialorrhea are consequences, as is the case of people who have mental retardation or who suffer from some type of neurological disorder such as cerebral palsy. In these cases, sialorrhea does not mean an increase in the production of saliva, but rather a difficult neuromuscular control that can be reversed through physical therapy or even a therapeutic repair surgery, obviously counting on the patient’s total help and effort. The problem is found when the person has great difficulty in holding saliva inside the mouth, coming out without being able to control.
Sialorrhea can also be linked to problems with swallowing or excessive saliva production and should be investigated for a more accurate diagnosis. Since patients suffering from the problem are at great risk of inhaling excess saliva and food into the lungs and choking on it. In the case of babies who usually drool a lot, do not worry, as this is part of their development and the birth of teeth . But if the condition worsens and extends beyond the expected age, the ideal is that a pediatrician is consulted. Excessive saliva in babies and children can also be caused by respiratory problems, nasal allergies, stomatitis and cases of tonsillitis that may be accompanied by fever and difficulty in swallowing.
Sialorrhea in Pregnancy – Is it normal and what to do?
The problem of sialorrhea can also happen during pregnancy , especially in the first months. The fact is directly related to morning nausea and excessive vomiting which are very common symptoms of pregnancy. This is what makes pregnant women feel the sensation of the mouth always full of water, or rather, saliva, which ends up showing difficulty in swallowing. The real cause has not been found yet, but medicine relates it to psychological and hormonal issues. But the increase in saliva production during pregnancy tends to disappear naturally over the months.
There are some ways to reduce and relieve the discomfort of sialorrhea during pregnancy, such as eating several meals in small portions throughout the day, thus facilitating swallowing. Reducing the intake of foods that have starch in their composition, such as bread and potatoes, in addition to citrus foods such as cucumbers, also reduces saliva production, decreasing discomfort, so it is worth redoubling food care during this period . Remembering that like children, during the gestational phase, sialorrhea can occur due to oral inflammation, stomach problems, throat infections and reflux problems, in addition to being symptoms of those who use drugs such as clonazepan and potassium chloride.
The solution of the problems reported above will solve the problem. If sialorrhea is only due to pregnancy, the symptoms will disappear over the months, usually disappearing at the end of the first trimester. If the increased saliva production continues, talk to your obstetrician who will assess the situation and refer you to the appropriate treatment if necessary.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.
Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
