When to Worry About Baby Development

Which father and mother does not drool in the development of their children? Waiting for the next step of discovery and development is a delight. Parents are crazy about news and always want to hurry as much as possible, but we all know that the baby’s development happens in their time, always different from the others.

Since we found out pregnant, it is easy to imagine our baby speaking its first words . Can we imagine what his first steps will be like and even who will be the lucky one to be called first by him? Even though it is a very difficult task, we have to be patient, everything will happen in the baby’s time.

In the first months, when the baby starts to babble his first words, contact with other babies and children is necessary and important to contribute to the development of speech.

For this reason, many child specialists advise that babies attend schools and daycare centers, due to the contact with other children of the same age group and how well this contact does. Activities given in these environments, even if seen as games, are totally stimulating for the development of babies.

Baby’s First Month

At the beginning of our son’s life, it is common for moms and dads to have this doubt: When to worry about the baby’s development? Is he developing as he should? Of all the baby’s senses, vision is the least developed at this stage, as it was not required during the entire pregnancy.

When the baby is born, the range of his vision is 20 to 30 centimeters, which more or less refers to the distance between the baby’s face and that of the mother at the time of breastfeeding. The baby cannot focus on objects beyond that distance, seeing everything still distorted.

The images are very blurry and double, since the two retinas are not yet joined, which makes the baby have myopic vision. Therefore, he responds very little to stimuli yet. He recognizes his parents by smell and especially by his voice.

Baby’s Second Month

One of the great moments of this period of the baby’s second month is the smile. When the baby is able to smile it indicates that his psychic and affective development is going very well. It is a curious phenomenon, because it does not depend on the parents’ gaze and receptivity.

Babies who do not see or hear also provide that smile. In addition to the smile, the 2-month-old baby is already able to lift his chin, showing that he is beginning to have control of the neck muscles.

At this stage, the baby begins to have the reflex of turning his face from side to side . It also begins to show reflexes such as trying to turn on your stomach or stretch your body backwards when raised.

Baby’s Third Month

The mouth is the baby’s gateway to discover the world. It is through the mouth that the baby knows the consistencies of objects, volumes and textures and even begins to know parts of the body. At this stage, he still does not put his foot in his mouth, but his hands are much of the time being appreciated, as well as some toys that seem somewhat attractive.

The baby’s reflexes in this phase begin to increase with each passing day. He is already able to lift his head, his torso and even move around looking for familiar people, objects and sounds.

At this stage, the baby’s sleep begins to change, but it is still possible that he is sleeping around 16 hours a day. Compared to an adult’s sleep, there are still many hours of sleep , but babies really need it for their development.

In the remaining months, each day or week new discoveries will take place. In the fifth month, the baby starts to become firmer and better support his body. His arms and legs become firmer and more agile to the movements. It is in a preparatory process to be able to crawl soon.

In the 6th month the baby is able to sit alone and without support. You already have control over your body, your pelvis and chest. The baby at this stage already interacts with other children and adults and responds to stimuli when he wants something.

In this period until completing the first year of life, the baby will strengthen its muscles by learning to crawl and later taking its first steps. Your first words will be said and your development will be clear every day.

When Noticed Something Different

It is worth noting that the baby’s development should not be compared to the others. Each one develops in its own time and can present different stages and discoveries . During monthly visits to the pediatrician, talk about your doubts.

If you notice something different about your baby’s development that worries you, ask questions during the consultation. It is always better to clarify doubts with those who understand , than to live worried and afraid about things that may be absolutely normal for the stage.

If your baby does not respond to stimuli and even with the passing of the months, simple steps of the baby’s development are not happening such as smiling, turning around, crawling , the pediatrician will accompany and instruct the competent specialist to carry out evaluative exams to investigate a possible delay psychomotor.

Rest assured, when any delay is detected, especially early on, it is possible to offer stimulating methods and very competent treatments to help your baby. When you first detect a problem, the easier and more effective the treatment will be.

Child Physiotherapy – When is it indicated?

For parents to understand, children’s physical therapy is aimed at treating newborns, babies, children and pre-teens, aiming to improve and stimulate movement skills.

With exercises, specialized methods and adapted equipment it is possible to stimulate movements and definitely help in the development of babies and children to have a normal life.

Usually, the diseases treated by children’s physical therapy are largely congenital (baby is born with it). But in general the service is broad and covers several causes and indications for treatment.

Child physiotherapy is able to treat diseases that can have different origins: muscular, skeletal, respiratory, neurological and so on. The interaction and support of the family is super important for the treatment, especially the presence of the father and mother.

Treatment with children’s physical therapy will provide a specialized and appropriate stimulus for each child’s delay and difficulty. Aiming to help you in your time, within your need and also aiming at better living conditions.
