If you have a small thing that bothers you a lot and even gets in the way of eating, it is thrush. They can appear in babies even in older people causing great discomfort, even to eat properly.
They appear in inexplicable places, under the tongue, corner of the mouth, inside the lip and in the corners of the cheeks. It looks like a pimple, whitish in color and sometimes yellowish and usually appears more in women due to hormonal issues.
What is cold sore?
The mouth is lined with mucosa and as it is very sensitive, small breakages of the skin known as superficial mucosal ulceration, foot and mouth ulcer or popularly known as thrush can occur .
It is a small, minuscule lesion that causes intense pain and burning, in addition to burning the area. They are benign lesions that do not cause major problems other than momentary discomfort.
Causes of Canker Sore in Babies and Children
There are several reasons that can cause thrush in babies and children , some of the main ones are: low immunity, viral problems, stomach problems, hormonal changes, emotional and use of some medications.
Canker sores in infants and children are not contagious, but they can occur as symptoms of infectious conditions or some diseases. The appearance of canker sores can also indicate that the baby and the child have some digestive problem, since canker sores appear as a “stomach alert”.
You may be suspicious of a cold sore in a baby’s mouth if you notice a change in his appetite. Canker sores offer some discomfort to eat and also make breastfeeding difficult.
What can be done to alleviate discomfort?
As we have already mentioned, eating or nursing during the onset of thrush is very painful. Some foods can even cause more pain if you touch the injury. Cold or icy foods can at least help relieve the discomfort of thrush in babies and children.
Even if thrush is difficult to feed, keep your child hydrated on a regular basis. Avoid very salty, acidic and hot foods, which can aggravate discomfort.
Do some foods make cold sore worse?
As already mentioned, hot, salty and acidic foods can aggravate the pain. During the appearance of thrush it is recommended to avoid foods that can aggravate the lesions or even cause new thrush. Acidic foods like pineapple, lemon and orange should be avoided.
Types of canker sores
The appearance of thrush in babies and children is divided into 3 types that determine its causes:
Minor Foot-and-mouth Disease: They are the most common canker sores and occur regularly in a large part of the population. They usually disappear after a week and leave no scars in place.
Major foot-and-mouth disease: These are the least common canker sores and have a longer period to disappear. They used to last around 2 weeks or more and cause a lot of difficulty in eating, in addition to severe pain.
Herpetiform Foot-and-Mouth Stomatitis: This is the most unusual type of cold sore and they usually appear as small clusters of thrush, which when joined together become even bigger lesions. They are extremely painful and last a little over a week.
Canker Sores Treatment
Usually no treatment is recommended for canker sores , as they usually disappear over the course of days. However, with the worsening of the lesions, some type of treatment may be necessary to relieve the symptoms, but only a specialist doctor can prescribe, after assessing the condition.
Keeping the hygiene in the mouth up to date is one of the important points in cold sore. Regular cleaning of the mouth will prevent the lesions caused by canker sores from becoming infected. One of the well-known and simple relief treatments is the use of bicarbonate.
The use of bicarbonate controls the pH of saliva and reduces the burning sensation caused by thrush. But it is not just just placing it on top of the cold sore site (this will cause a lot of pain). The recommended is to dilute the bicarbonate in a glass with water and to rinse, preferably with warm water that will bring relief.
One teaspoon of bicarbonate for three fingers of water is enough, at least 3 times a day.
Some homemade recipes like mouthwash of propolis tea can also help and provide relief. But what we really recommend is to see a doctor if the pain persists and you can receive the appropriate treatment for your problem.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.
Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
