How to Lower Children’s Fever?

Index

Nightmare of many moms and dads, villain of sleepless nights and worries of dads on first, second, third, fourth trip … she is terrible, she arrives suddenly and leaves her baby sly and crying, she is the FEVER !!

Imagine a day at Grandma’s house, a very happy Saturday for the family. Joana was 11 months old, about to turn 1 year old and I feel that she is a little hot and her cheeks are very red despite having been out of the sun for some time. The scare after the thermometer, 39.4 !!! Marcos and I almost freaked out! So, what now? I had never taken care of a child with a fever in my life! What to do, what to give there, there, there… I would rush to the hospital and the doctor’s diagnosis: NOTHING! But how come nothing? Well the most common possibilities are many to give a fever like this to the child:

  • Gripe
  • Cold
  • Tooth
  • Sore throat

Fever is a defense of the body and a natural reaction of the body. In case you do not find anything that could indicate an infection in the clinical examination, the best thing would be to check with deeper exams such as a blood test which detects the presence of infection no matter how small and is the cause of 99% of very high fevers and in those cases an antibiotic is needed. The fever has an incubation period, it would be 3 days on average, but this with lower fevers it is considerable to go on treating at home with antipyretics such as Dipirona or Paracetamol and even Ibuprofen because the tendency to disappear by itself is great, but in the case of very high fevers the ideal is to take immediately to the doctor, there they know how to lower the fever more quickly and effectively.

Moms and dads, don’t think it’s a 7-headed bug, yes, a high fever must be controlled, but knowing how to lower the temperature and keep calm is fundamental. With my mommy experience I will leave my tips which I acquired with many, many nights of sleep taking care of the little ones, so how to lower the fever?

  • Give the antipyretic indicated by the pediatrician in the right dose respecting schedules
  • Do not give the child a cold bath, as it may increase the temperature even more, the ideal is a warm bath, but never cold. The best thing to do is to place alcohol swabs in strategic places such as the armpits, groin and forehead.
  • Give the child plenty of fluids, if she accepts of course. Moisturizing is essential for replenishing amino acids that the body spends at high temperature.
  • If she is active let her play, it is even quite healthy, or if not, stimulating sleep is very good because the medication works faster and when she is perspiring it is a sign that the fever is already subsiding.
  • Do not be alarmed if it takes too long, several times the fever just started to subside with the medication 2 hours after administering the antipyretic medication.

What did Joana have? It was the influence of the tooth that was being born , she always had a tendency to have fevers too high, even for a flu or sore throat, remember children under 6 years of age have a natural tendency to have febrile seizures so don’t be alarmed if happens ok, it only happens in cases of very rapid rise in temperature.

Taking advantage of the space I want to tell a novelty to our mommy readers, who intend to have another baby in the future or have a couple friend who is trying to get pregnant. In partnership with the company Famivita, we developed some products that help in the fertility of men and women, among them fertility vitamins that potentiates FamiFerti ovulation   and in the case of men improves the quality of sperm, ViriFerti, as well as the ovulation test, pregnancy test and the FamiGel lubricating gel. You can  purchase them here  in our online store.

I hope I helped in some way!

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.

Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
