If there is a situation that is the fear of parents and children no one should go through it is having APLV or allergy to cow’s milk protein. Even though it is a frightening problem that directly affects the diet of small children, the problem has been diagnosed in around 7% of children, especially in the first months of life.
In the first months it is common to experience the problem due to the immaturity of the digestive system in addition to the low immunity of the organism, which facilitate the development of APLV. The conclusion of the diagnosis must be carried out by a specialist who will carefully analyze the case before requesting the treatment that is so radical, where it is necessary to completely remove cow’s milk and its derivatives from the baby or child’s food.
In the case of babies up to 6 months of age and who must receive exclusive breastfeeding, the withdrawal of cow’s milk and its derivatives must occur through the mother, who must cut from her food menu any food that has cow’s milk in its composition so that do not pass the baby through breast milk.
At first it is a complicated task, since most of the food consumed by us humans has cow’s milk in its composition. Butter, yogurt, breads, cakes, cookies all need milk in their recipes, in addition to some products that are not suitable for ingestion, but are used daily as is the case with some soaps and even cosmetics.
One of the tasks that will be necessary from the discovery of the APLV is to read the labels of all the products that will enter your home. Checking the composition is extremely important and it should be warned that milk is not always indicated by its own name, and can be mentioned as:
- Caseinato
- Lactate
- Chantilly
- Milk cream
- Born
- Whey
- Milk Yeast
Other names such as lactulone, lactulose, hydrolyzed casein, buttermilk , curd, butter fat, butter oil and milk compound can be found referring to the composition of milk in the product. Unfortunately companies are not obliged to inform the composition with the specific name for easy identification of the consumer.
Symptoms of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy
In most cases of children suffering from APLV, the symptoms are very similar, such as vomiting and regurgitation that cause great loss of nutrients, poor appetite and blood in the stool. Symptoms can appear immediately after consumption or in minutes up to 2 hours after ingestion.
There are cases of milk protein allergy cow of late, it can start to cause reactions after 48 hours of consumption to a depois.Sintomas week as signs in the skin and difficulty breathing are also evidence of a possible CMPA and should be investigated thoroughly, as it may be symptoms of other allergies, including food poisoning.
Table diarrhea, constipation and blood in the stools along with chronic abdominal pain and cough are the most common signs of the case and are present in 99% of cases. Weight loss, anorexia and irritability occur in some isolated cases.
The diagnosis should follow through the suspension of all foods that contain cow’s milk protein, following skin tests that will serve for more detailed investigation, the IgE test being one of the exam options to be requested.
Treatment should be carried out by completely replacing cow’s milk with protein hydrolyzate formulas or formulas containing soy. For older children, the substitution can be made with goat’s milk, rice milk, soy and other options available for children intolerant to milk protein, including milk based on free amino acids.
Remembering that APLV and lactose intolerance are distinct problems, even if both occur due to the consumption of cow’s milk. APLV is when an allergy caused by milk proteins occurs, whereas lactose intolerance is when the body cannot digest products that contain milk.

My name is Dr. Alexis Hart I am 38 years old, I am the mother of 3 beautiful children! Different ages, different phases 16 years, 12 years and 7 years. In love with motherhood since always, I found it difficult to make my dreams come true, and also some more after I was already a mother.
Since I imagined myself as a mother, in my thoughts everything seemed to be much easier and simpler than it really was, I expected to get pregnant as soon as I wished, but it wasn’t that simple. The first pregnancy was smooth, but my daughter’s birth was very troubled. Joana was born in 2002 with a weight of 2930kg and 45cm, from a very peaceful cesarean delivery but she had already been born with congenital pneumonia due to a broken bag not treated with antibiotics even before delivery.
